New York Holiday

We flew with Delta airlines direct from Manchester and had a brilliant flight. I hate all this on-line check in business and rarely bother and have found that by doing so I've ended up with free seat upgrades on the few times we have taken scheduled flights. We had been allocated aisle seats towards the back of the plane when I looked on-line but at checkin we were given different seats which happened to be a window and centre seat in the "plus" section towards the front of the plane. It was so civilised with loads of leg room, free headsets, toothbrush/toothpaste etc and an iPad style screen showing 1,000s of films and programmes from loads of channels. There was even wifi and an electrical socket for keeping my phone charged.

We didn't bother with a taxi from the airport as there was a queue and 20 minute wait plus it was rush hour and the taxis were taking up to 2 hours to get to Manhattan. We caught the air train to Jamaica Station and then bought a weeks pass for the subway and got on one subway train that stopped just round the corner from our hotel. We are staying on 7th and 51st which is between Times Square and Central Park. We've stayed at this hotel before and love the location as it is in the thick of things. We have a spacious corner room with large king sized bed and thankfully a bath. We've found that a bath is essential to soak aching bones and feet after all the sightseeing.

It was my birthday yesterday so we spent some time wandering around Times Square and the Rockefeller Centre. We then walked to Central Park and had lunch at the Tavern on the Green. Their Bloody Marys are to die for (I had 2!).

We caught the subway to Central Station to have afternoon drinks at the Oyster Bar and then it was back to the hotel for a bottle of duty free champagne that we had on ice in our room. We then headed out to Hells Kitchen for a Mexican meal at El Centro and then back to bed.

The day before we had walked miles and miles around Central Park after the biggest diner breakfast I had ever eaten.

We had a pitstop at our hotel and then caught the subway to Hudson Yards towards the Hudson River. I wanted to walk the High Line which is a walkway built on disused railway track high up over the roads. There are the occasional little stalls selling pictures and photos, loads of places to sit and take in the views and installation art. I loved it.

We are out in the evening at a great little Italian called Patzeria Friends and Family and had the best pizza I had ever eaten. We bought a medium between the two of us and it was so big that they place them on a stand in the middle of the table so there is enough room for your plate underneath.

Today we are thinking of visiting the Statue of Liberty as I've not been there before . Last time we visited we just sailed passed it on the Staton Island Ferry. My feet need a rest from all the walking. I've brought sensible shoes, boots and trainers but still have blisters on both feet. A day sitting on a boat and a bimble around the Statue of Liberty should give them a break.

We have another week here yet so I'll post again about our holiday exploits.
